Wendy Williams was there on the big day for her son Kevin Hunter Jr.
On Thursday, Dec. 19, the 60-year-old former host of The Wendy Williams Show marked her son’s graduation from Florida International University. A picture of the event was obtained by PEOPLE.
Williams was seen riding with her family on a motorized scooter that she had designed with a Chanel-themed front pouch and a cup holder with Louis Vuitton logos. For the event, the TV star got dressed up in a sparkly low-cut dress, black boots, and a big “W” necklace.
Kevin, 24, is the former Wendy Williams Show host’s first and only child with ex-husband Kevin Hunter. He was born in August 2000. In 2019, she broke up with Hunter because she said he had a child with someone else. Their divorce was completed in 2020. Hunter said sorry to Williams in a statement and admitted to “some wrongs,” but he never confirmed this claim.
The Wendy Williams Show, which was named after the host, ended in June 2022 because Wendy was sick with Graves’ disease.
Kevin, who stays mostly out of the public eye, came back into it in February 2024 when he was in the trailer for Where is Wendy Williams?, a Lifetime documentary about Wendy’s life and health after her talk show was canceled. He was worried about his mom’s health and her ability to watch TV again.
“My mom, she always talks about how she wants to work, but I feel as though she’s worked enough,” he stated. “She has people around her that are ‘yes people’ and allowing this to continue.”
Kevin was also unhappy with Sabrina Morrissey, Wendy’s former court-appointed guardian, and said he wasn’t sure if they were doing what was best for her.
“I feel like the guardian has not done a good job of protecting my mom,” he stated.
Wendy was told by her medical team a week before the documentary ran that she has primary progressive aphasia and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Kevin Jr., who had been told she had “alcohol-related dementia,” and the rest of her family didn’t know about the diagnosis until they told everyone.
This is still true for me: I need peace and personal space to grow,” Wendy told PEOPLE at the time. “Please just know that your positivity and encouragement are deeply appreciated.”
The papers that PEOPLE got from Morrissey last month say that Williams is now “cognitively impaired, permanently disabled, and legally incapacitated.”
Morrissey is still in court battles with A&E Television Networks, Lifetime Entertainment, and other companies connected to the release of Where Is Wendy Williams?, a documentary series about the TV personality’s guardianship, health diagnoses, and life after The Wendy Williams Show. The news about Williams’ health came at the same time.
The lawsuit said that the show’s producers “filmed without a valid contract and released without Guardian’s consent.” It also says Williams was “highly vulnerable” and “clearly incapable of consenting to being filmed, much less being humiliated and exploited.”
Williams went out with Kevin at the health store Bolingo Balance in Newark, NJ, in August, even though the court case was still going on.
