The University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) has recently installed a Talos F200i Scanning and Transmission Electron Microscope to advance research and ensure that research is internationally competitive. This microscope is unique in the Balearic Islands.
The new equipment makes it possible to obtain images with a resolution of up to 0.1 nm, as well as to directly analyze the elemental chemical composition of samples using X-rays, which will significantly improve the research conducted by about twenty UIB scientific groups.
This applies to areas such as physics of materials, biology or medicine. It will also be at the service of groups from other research institutes such as IMEDEA (CSIC-UIB) and IdISBa. The Son Espases University Hospital, through the Pathological Anatomy Service, is already using this microscope for diagnostic tasks.
The microscope is available to the UIB research community through the Science and Technology Service. The acquisition was financed under an instrumental grant agreement between the government and the UIB, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
The microscope was presented to the UIB research community on Monday, July 24 at the Science and Technology Services and University Research Institutes building on the UIB campus. The rector of the UIB, Dr. Jaume Caro, intervened; Vice-Rector for Research and Science Policy Dr. Victor Homar; and Director of the Scientific and Technical Service of the UIB, Dr. Sebastia Alberti.
Also in attendance were the Vice-Chancellor of the Campus and University of Health, Dr. Adria Muntaner; Vice-Rector for Economics and Infrastructure Dr. Carles Mule; manager M. Consolación Hernandez; Professor of Physics Dr. Ruben Santamarta and Head of the Department of Economics and Institutional Projects Andreu Alcover.
Present on behalf of the government were Regional Secretary for Innovation and Digital Society Antoni Carmona, Director General of Universities and Higher Arts Education Antonio Alcover and Director General of Administrative Simplification, Modernization and Digital Administration Francisco Canovas.
