The Council of Ministers has approved a Royal Decree (RD) that will govern the provision of 72 million euros for financing 706 places in the specialty “Medicine” in state universities in the 2023-2024 academic year.
This increase in seats is 15 percent more than currently, according to figures provided by press secretary Isabel Rodriguez at a press conference after the Board of Governors.
This RD, Rodriguez explained, aims to “guarantee a long-term increase availability of doctors as a partial measure to reduce the shortage of specialists in various specialties.
“We want to improve the quality of teaching for a degree in medicine and increase in the medium term number of certified doctors Spanish universities in order to promote access to specialized medical training in the field of medicine,” said the representative of the minister.
The need for specialists
With this Royal Decree, the aim is to meet the needs outlined in the studies on the supply needs of medical professionals published by the Ministry of Health, and in particular in the report published in March 2021. A time horizon 2021-2035a document that verified the needs for specialists, as in the case of family and community medicine.
The beneficiary entities must submit through the electronic headquarters of the Ministry of Health a request for an advance payment of a subsidy addressed to General Directorate of a professional organization. Applications will begin at 10:00 on August 10, 2023 and end at 10:00 September 4, 2023.
