FC Dallas received Charlotte as part of the debut of both in league cup which ended with the victory of the guests thanks to a penalty shoot-out after a 2-2 draw in regular time.
At Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas, there was a very tight first half with no emotion that seemed to be over before halftime.
However, the locals found a way to open the scoring ahead of stoppage time, when Dallas leaked the ball to Jesus Ferreira on the edge of the box so that he waited for Bernard Camungo to enter on the wing to first cross the inside and shoot into the post.
But what was built in 45 minutes collapsed for the locals as in the 58th minute of the second half, Facundo Kigon converted a penalty on Karol Swiderski and he attacked Charlotte invincibly in a 1-1 draw.
After the tie, Dallas made two substitutions that paid off after 10 minutes when Camungo provided an assist at Sebastian Lletjet’s finish with his right foot into the left post to restore a 2-1 lead.
Charlotte reacted with three offensive changes, of which 10 remained, with the intention of drawing again, as under League Cup rules, ties are decided on penalties in regular time, as happened in the match between Orlando City and Houston Dynamo.
As if by magic, the change worked in the visitors’ favor as Ben Bender dramatically found a 2-2 goal in stoppage time to force a penalty shoot-out where Charlotte rallied better by not missing from 11 pitches, while Dallas signed a closing nightmare after missing two charges.
