Céline Dion is remembering her late husband René Angélil on the day that they would have been married 30 years ago. Angélil passed away on January 14, 2016, two days before his 74th birthday. He had throat cancer.
The famous artist, who is 56 years old, shared a touching message on Instagram along with a picture of herself and Angélil at their wedding in 1994. The cute picture shows Dion with her veil and wedding crown on as she looks into Angélil’s eyes and kisses him on the cheeks. He put his arms around her and looked into her eyes.
“Every day, you still make our hearts happy.” You’re everything to us. We miss you. Happy 30th anniversary, my love!” Dion wrote in the post’s caption, writing it from herself and the couple’s three kids: René-Charles, 23, and Nelson and Eddy, twins who are 14 years old.
They met for the first time in 1980, when Dion, then 12 years old, sang for him at an audition. That’s when he became her boss. They worked together for seven years before Dion, then 19 years old, started dating him in 1987. At first, she didn’t tell anyone about their connection because she was worried about what other people would think.
In 1994, she told PEOPLE, “I was scared of what people would think.” She finally wanted everyone to know how much she loved Angélil. “You want to shout it from the rooftops when you’re in love!”
Before they told everyone about their engagement, they had been engaged for a few years. “When I was old enough to tell people we were together, it was like bang! Love! “In my book, Love Always Wins,” Dion wrote.
They got married on December 17, 1994, at the Notre-Dame Basilica in Montréal. The wedding was shown live on Canadian TV. She told Vogue in April 2024 that she wouldn’t change a thing about the fancy event.
She said, “I will remember this moment for the rest of my life.” “There was no way that dress could fit.” It could have been three times as big on my head. Because he was and still is such a great person, I could have worn six different dresses that night. He made me feel my best. He did.
Angélil was told she had throat cancer four years after they got married. In 2000, they told each other that Angélil had been diagnosed with cancer-free. In Vegas that same year, they renewed their vows as a way to enjoy. In 2014, two years before he died, Angélil’s cancer came back.
In December 2022, Dion told everyone that she had stiff-person syndrome.
It was in June that she told PEOPLE that she goes on trips for her treatments and “always brings pictures” of Angélil with her. “And we have pictures, of course, all over the place in the house.”
“René and I are still married.” “He’s still my husband,” she told People. “He’ll always be.”
